  • Sejong City, Korea's New Capital
    Korea 2024. 3. 30. 08:52

Sejong City, also known as Sejong Special Autonomous City, is a relatively new administrative city in South Korea. Here's an overview of its history

    Background

Sejong City was established with the aim of alleviating overcrowding and centralization in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and fostering balanced regional development across the country. It was named after King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, who is renowned for his contributions to Korean culture and science, including the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul.

    Establishment

The idea of creating a new administrative city was first proposed in the early 2000s as part of efforts to decentralize government functions away from Seoul. In 2005, the South Korean government announced plans to establish Sejong City as the new administrative capital of the country, with the intention of relocating numerous government ministries and agencies there.

    Development

Construction and development of Sejong City began in earnest following the government's announcement. The city was planned to accommodate government offices, residential areas, educational institutions, research facilities, and cultural amenities. The project aimed to create a modern, efficient, and sustainable urban center that would serve as the administrative hub of South Korea.

    Relocation of Government Ministries

As part of the decentralization efforts, several government ministries and agencies were relocated to Sejong City from Seoul and other regions. However, the relocation process faced challenges and met with resistance from some government officials and employees who were reluctant to move away from Seoul.

    Completion and Growth

Sejong City has continued to develop and grow since its establishment. While it initially served primarily as an administrative center, efforts have been made to attract businesses, investment, and residents to the city. Infrastructure projects, including transportation networks and public amenities, have been implemented to support the city's growth and enhance its livability.

    Current Status

As of my last update, Sejong City continues to evolve as an administrative, cultural, and economic center in South Korea. While it has not fully replaced Seoul as the country's capital, it plays a significant role in the decentralization efforts and contributes to the balanced development of the country's regions.

Recently, Korea's Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the People's Power Emergency Response Committee, announced a pledge for the April 10 general elections to completely relocate the National Assembly to Sejong City.

Chairman Han said at the Yeouido headquarters on the 27th, "We will end Yeouido politics by completely relocating the National Assembly to Sejong City. We will actively promote Seoul development by lifting restrictions on the development of the city, including Yeouido and its surrounding areas."
